50 Cent and Cam’ron Feud Escalates
I’ve been following these two guys’ antics for most of this week, which probably makes me a late-comer compared to most hip-hop heads, but Wikipedia and 102 Jamz here in NC got me up to speed, so I think I’ve got my head wrapped around the whole thing. For everyone else, here’s the timeline up to now. Even if you don’t care about the petty bickering, the music videos are vaguely amusing.
- February 1, 2007. 50 Cent is on Angie Martinez’s radio show and says Koch Records, the Dipset’s label, is an “artist’s graveyard” because it’s where artists go when they’re at the end of their careers. I’m inclined to agree overall, with a few notable exceptions (the Dipset’s own Jim Jones), but that’s beyond the point. Cam’ron comes on during this segment and gets belligerent to the point where Angie has to cut him off. 50 for the most part seems calm.
- February 8, 2007. 50 cent releases a song called “Funeral Music,” referring to his earlier graveyard statement. It’s basically a diss track about Cam’ron with a bunch of mostly predictable posturing. It has a few funny moments though, notably at the end when he restructures the Dipset to have Jim Jones as the head, Juelz Santana as the Capo, and demoting Cam’ron to “Soldier” (effectively turning the Dipset on its head). 50 also makes it clear that he’s cool with most everyone else from Dipset, which I think is a good thing. Here’s the video.
- February 9, 2007. Cam’ron follows 50 up with his own diss track called “Cuurtis.” It’s also more predictable posturing, but being one who appreciates humor more than overly serious bile, I honestly can’t get into it. It’s boring to me. On the other hand, we get a long spiel about 50 cent snitchin’ on him. I assume that’s the center of all this, but the details are sketchy. Anyway, here’s THAT video.
- February 13-15, 2007. Cuurtis.com and Camerongiles.net get featured throughout the hiphop forums.
- Cuurtis.com, which originally seemed like a diss site for 50, looks to be a blog following the situation, with all the diss tracks, videos, etc. of both sides. The owners apparently lean slightly towards Dipset, but are probably unaffiliated.
- Camerongiles.net apparently had a funny picture of Cam’ron holding a gun to his head that was labeled with 50 cent’s name, but it has since been replaced with a blank normal myspace page. I’m confused.
I basically agree with this guy who says Cam’ron probably feels a little insecure that 50 Cent might just be right and Jim Jones really is getting more hype than him. As with all rap feuds, these guys are being pretty darn silly, and to me, it’s just entertainment as long as they don’t do something stupid like show up at a radio station and start shooting each other.
Duke da God (of Dipset) probably gives the best insight on the situation (interview on AllHipHop):
But right now it’s just Cam and 50 and they don’t really know each other so it’s nothing really to me honestly, but it’s Hip-Hop: you gotta see who is the biggest, the baddest - it’s competition but right now its just Cam and 50 and hopefully it just stays just them two, it ain’t got to spread out of control, that’s it- mano a mano.
Of course, the most important question of all: who is winning? In my opinion, it’s 50 Cent; he’s playing the cards his way and Cam’ron is taking the bait hard. 50’s the master of passive agressiveness, and nobody’s going to juggle a feud better than him, just by sheer experience. Cam’ron, even when he makes valid points, gets overshadowed by his anger. Who goes out on the street and gets a bunch of folks to just chant “Curtis?” For that matter, can anybody honestly sit through his indecipherable diatribe on how much he hates snitching? It’s neither clever nor interesting, and his entire game up to now has seemed reactionary and thus weak.
Fiddy 1. Cam’ron 0.
